Poll: About 60% of Japanese support the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics


An opinion poll conducted by the Japanese "Kyodo" News Agency revealed that 59.7% of Japanese believe that the "Tokyo" Olympics and the Paralympic Olympics, scheduled to start less than three months from now, should be canceled, especially with the continued increase in the number of new infections with the emerging Corona virus "Covid-19" .


The poll - conducted by phone and published by the Japanese newspaper "Japan Times" on its website on Sunday - showed that 25.2% said the games should be held without spectators, while 12.6% expressed their desire to hold the largest global sporting event with a limited number of spectators. .


Commenting on this, the newspaper confirmed that the results of the survey reflect increasing suspicions in the Japanese street about the holding of the games, which have already been postponed for a year due to Corona, so that the postponed date comes in conjunction with the country's exposure to the fourth wave of injuries, which includes more variants and the most ferocious and widespread strains. While the Olympiad organizers have already decided not to receive an audience from outside the country, to prevent the spread of the virus.


The Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to open on July 23, taking into account that Tokyo itself is among nine Japanese provinces currently under a national emergency to combat Covid-19, which is scheduled to last until May 31.


In the poll, 85% said they believed that the introduction of the Coronavirus vaccine in Japan was slow, while 71.5% expressed their discontent with the Japanese government's handling of the epidemic crisis .. and 90.3% expressed their increasing concern about the new strains of the virus.


Amid the mounting wave of dissatisfaction with the Japanese government's response to the health crisis, approval of the performance of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's government reached 41.1%, down from 44% in the previous poll conducted last April .. The rejection rate increased to 47.3% from 36.1%. .
