The Sea of Marmara in Turkey was exposed to a strange natural phenomenon, as a dense layer of organic matter characterized by high viscosity, known as "sea mucus", or "sea gum", spread and covered ports, beaches and large areas of sea water, and the substance threatens marine life and the fishing industry in The Sea of Marmara, which called for Turkish action and a pledge to save the Sea of Marmara.
Reuters revealed that some of the sticky substance sank under the waves, which led to the suffocation of marine life, and for his part, Murat Korum, the Turkish Minister of Environment, announced that 25 boats had already begun to clean the sea surface, and set up barriers, and 18 other ships to prevent the spread of "snot" the sea,” and prevented it from expanding.
He revealed that illegal fishing will be prevented and nets left in the sea will be removed, noting that Turkey will declare the Marmara Sea a protected area by the end of 2021.
Scientists have revealed that the reason behind the spread of sea mucus is climate change and pollution, and this organic matter includes a very diverse group of microorganisms and spreads strongly when wastewater rich in what these organisms feed on are poured into sea water.
The residents of Istanbul welcomed the process of cleansing the Marmara Sea to remove mucus, but they complained about the severe pollution in the Marmara Sea, which has been rampant for years.
And Sky News Arabia revealed that Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, home to nearly 16 million people, and has several factories and industrial centers, on the border of the sea.
Marine gum has reached unprecedented levels this year in Turkey, and it can be seen above the water as a sticky gray layer along the shores of Istanbul and neighboring provinces.
