National mourning 3 days in Mexico after the metro tragedy

The government of Mexico declared national mourning for a period of 3 days, after the tragedy that occurred on Monday night on the metro in the capital, which killed 24 people and left more than 70 injured.

And the Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, signed the decree, which was published yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, in the Official Gazette of the Union, stating: “National mourning shall be declared for a period of 3 days .. It was agreed to lower the national flag to half the mast, on 4 and 6 May 2021. ".

"In the face of the aforementioned tragedy, the federal government expresses its solidarity and deep pain towards the deceased, the injured and their families," Lopez said.

He stressed that Mexico will punish those responsible for the collapse of the bridge from which the metro train fell, and that the investigation must be carried out quickly and nothing should be hidden from the citizens, stressing that "there is no immunity for anyone."

The accident raised many questions about safety, in one of the busiest metro systems in the world, which transports millions of people every day.

The bridge that collapsed was part of the Metro Line 12, which is a network around which allegations of corruption and structural weakness have been littered.

And in 2014, just two years after it opened, many of the line's stations were closed for structural repairs to the bridge.
