Lebanese Foreign Ministry: Drug smuggling abroad harms the Lebanese economy and farmers


The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that smuggling drugs in containers or trucks loaded with fruits and vegetables from Lebanon to the outside is an act punishable by Lebanese law, noting that smuggling and shipping drugs is a crime that harms the Lebanese economy, farms and the reputation of Lebanon as a whole.


This came in a statement issued by the "Lebanese Foreign Ministry", today, Friday, in which it announced its notification from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Beirut about the content of the Saudi decision to prevent the entry of vegetables and fruits to its lands from Lebanon, noting that the Lebanese Foreign Minister Charbel Wehbe conveyed the matter to senior officials in The Lebanese state.


The Foreign Ministry statement stated that the Lebanese authorities must do their utmost to control all smuggling operations, by intensifying the activities of the security services and customs at border crossings in light of the Lebanese laws that criminalize trafficking, smuggling and drug abuse, to suppress this scourge and stop its spread and to prevent harm to innocent citizens, farmers, industrialists and the Lebanese economy .


The Saudi authorities had announced earlier in the day that shipments of Lebanese vegetables and fruits would not enter the Kingdom or transit through its territory, starting tomorrow, Sunday, in light of the increasing targeting of drug smugglers originating in Lebanon or passing through Lebanese territory and using vegetable shipments. And fruits as a cover for her in smuggling operations.


The Saudi authorities indicated that this procedure comes due to the failure of the Lebanese state authorities to take practical measures to stop the smuggling of drugs into the Kingdom, and that it will continue until the Lebanese authorities provide sufficient and reliable guarantees to take the necessary measures to stop the smuggling operations.
