Death toll in Pakistan train crash rises to 34


The death toll from two trains colliding in Pakistan has risen to at least 34, with dozens injured, some of whom are still stuck in the metal wreck.


According to the Swissinfo website, a spokesman for Pakistan Railways said that ambulance teams are active at the site to get an unknown number of passengers stuck in the wreckage of the "Mult Express" train near Daharki in the northern state of Sindh.


The train coming from Karachi derailed at dawn near the city of Daharki, before colliding with another train coming in the opposite direction, according to the spokesman.


Pictures taken with mobile phones showed metal debris and several overturned green locomotives. It also showed a medical team treating an injured person, only his torso was visible from the wreckage.


Omar Tufail, a Daharki police official, said at least 34 people were killed and dozens were injured in the accident.


"The site is remote and we are facing difficulty in organizing the rescue operation," the spokesman explained, especially in bringing the appropriate equipment in order to remove at least six vehicles that crashed in the accident.
