Venezuela resorts to e-commerce to save the economy

Venezuela is currently trying to boost and revitalize the economy, through the application of digital trade and the implementation of policies to renew and enhance agricultural production, as new national strategies in this field have been announced, according to the Venezuelan "Tele Sur" channel.

In this context, the President of the Bank of Venezuela, Jose Javier Morales, said that there is a development in pushing trade to people through digital points of sale (C2P) through which money is received instantly, and this allows transactions at all times over the Internet.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro considered the application of these new digital tools to be a "win-win" idea and emphasized: "We are winning with speed, by direct payment (...) ... with the C2P system."

Additionally, Morales explained, Bank of Venezuela has developed an app called BDV Digital, which has more than 150,000 downloads to date and allows for frequent-use operations such as transfers, key payments, recharging of phone operators, service payments, and retail.

The prominent Venezuelan political figure highlighted the multiple advantages of this type of e-commerce in the country's economic recovery in the face of restrictions imposed by unilateral US sanctions.

Maduro considered that these initiatives promote an economy that is able to overcome "the scourge of economic war and sanctions," and said "an economy supported by our productive, financial, monetary and technological effort, and an economy supported by our own efforts, in its capabilities, that it does not depend on anyone."

In addition, during Maduro's meeting, government officials and agencies discussed introducing the elderly to payment methods and e-commerce. In this sense, data show that approximately 93% of these residents have electronic debit cards and 6% use mobile banking services.
